Successful Homeschool Evaluations

If you homeschool in the State of Florida your children will need to have a test or a portfolio assessment.

Testing:
Students need to sign up to take a standardized test like the FCAT or Stanford Achievement test.
Sign up at a local public school as assigned by your County School Board.
or
Sign up with a homeschool group in the area who is administering a standardized test.

The Testing Alternative: Portfolio Assessment
  1. Call a certified teacher to evaluate and sign for your completed school year.
  2. Prepare a portfolio or gather documentation for your school year.

I have reviewed portfolios for almost 20 years.

The best "A+" portfolios that I have evaluated include the following:

  1.  All papers and samples organized in a 3 ring binder or file box.
  2. Documentation of attendance.  A formal attendance log or log of hours completed with dates of the school year.
  3.  Papers that are dated documenting that daily schooling/learning was taking place.
  4. Various work samples from the school year that demonstrate the student is performing on or above grade level. (From each of the main subjects: Math, English, Social Studies, & Science, as well as any other extracurricular activities.)
  5. Photos of projects completed and of daily activities.
  6. Writing samples.
  7. A list of books read during the year.
  8. Documentation that a student has knowledge of using technology.
  9. A field trip log with photos.
  10. For High School students a record of credit hours and grades listed, for future transcript preparation.
